Happy Mother's Day! In this heartfelt post, we reflect on the special moments shared with Joe's mom during our recent podcast episode. We dive into cherished memories and the simple joys that come with spending time together. If you're struggling to remember the good times growing up during this new phase of life - caregiving - then spend a few moments with us while Amy asks them questions to bring back the good memories for a moment of joy.

The Stress of Caregiving Can Overshadow the Good Times

Joe has been struggling to find the positive moments of growing up with his mom. Most people remember the negative things more easily, especially when frustration and exhaustion sets in day after day. Mom's cognitive impairment, childish behaviors, and constant complaining is wearing us down. For this Mother's Day Special episode of our podcast - the Rolling Rogans' Art of Aging - I decided to ask specific questions to trigger good memories for Joe and his mom to help them reconnect during the stress of caregiving.

**Why This Matters: For mom, dementia is stealing her energy and ability to find joy in the small things. Getting her to remember long term memories helps her get out of the cycle of negativity which eases caregiver stress. Also, when the child becomes the parent, it's easy to forget the good times.

**How to Do It: Consider asking similar questions we asked in this episode.

  • "What made you proud of your child when they were younger?"

  • "What makes you proud of them now?"

  • "What's your favorite memory of your child?"

  • "What makes you feel loved and cared for?"

**Common Mistake: It's easy to get annoyed with repetitive questions and complaints. If you don't take a step back as a caregiver and remember your role and a family member, you can find it more difficult to keep going in the long run. Remembering those moments of joy helps you through the challenging moments. It's a mental break to laugh and smile together.

Cherishing Family Moments

During our podcast, we reminisced about Joe's family gatherings and the laughter they bring. His mom shared her recent experience of helping her boyfriend with tasks, which made her feel fulfilled yet tired. She remarked, "I just feel worried about him; he's too nice a guy to go through all this stuff."

**Why This Matters: Supporting loved ones is essential, but it’s equally important to take care of yourself.

**How to Apply It: Engage in open conversations with family members, checking in on their well-being.

**Key Insight: My mom's caring nature shines through, reminding us that love often involves sacrifices.

Creative Outlets and Personal Growth

We also discussed our recent art day, where we painted together. Mom painted sunflowers, which she loves. "I painted three paintings," she said, reflecting on the joy of creating. She went from grumbling and complaining throughout the morning to pure joy and laughter during our girls day painting party.

**Why This Matters: Engaging in creative activities can boost focus and mood in people with dementia. The shift of creating something brings a sense of accomplishment in a time they feel like they are loosing so much.

**How to Do It: If your loved one is in a facility, they usually have activities coordinators. Same thing goes for those helping their family age in place, they must be given direction to create because many of them loose the ability to self motivate. Organize a family art day—everyone can express themselves freely.

**Example from Our Conversation: Mom mentioned, "I painted what I was thinking about," highlighting the importance of personal expression.

Laughing Through the Memories

Laughter is a bond that connects us, especially in our family. We shared funny anecdotes from Joe's childhood, such as his amusing "jet-propelled" moments at McDonald's.

**Why This Matters: Humor lightens the mood and fosters a positive family environment.

**How to Apply It: Share funny stories during family meals or when agitation escalates.

**Key Insight: Mom's laughter at Joe's antics shows how connecting memories and humor plays a crucial role in dementia care.

Conclusion

This Mother's Day was not just a celebration of moms; it was a reminder of the importance of family and laughter. By cherishing these moments, we create lasting memories that enrich our lives.
